fireworks at sunset

Independence Day is one of my favorite holidays— fireworks, barbecue and bad American flag decor pop up at every turn, and it makes me smile. While I’ve never donned uber-patriotic clothes or makeup, this year I opted to show my love for the Fourth of July holiday by getting a blinged-out manicure inspired by one of the latest trends to hit the beauty blogosphere: glitter tips!

{Here's my more-subtle interpretation of firworks on my fingernails using Essie's "Meet Me at Sunset" and some glittery topcoat.}

I brought my bottle of Essie’s “Meet Me at Sunset,” a rich red-orange from its new summer 2011 “Braziliant” line, to the nail salon and found an orange and yellow glittery topcoat in the nail salon’s polish collection. The manicurist was skeptical when I told her that I wanted glitter just on the tips, and raised her eyebrows even more when I told her I wanted to see what it looked like with just glitter tips on my ring fingers (like Emily’s tutorial on mermaid nails). We tried it, and though it was cute, I opted for some uniform bling across all 10 tips. I call my fun combination “Fireworks at Sunset” (I’ve always wanted to be the person who names nail polish colors).

Blinged-out nails or not, I hope you enjoy your holiday and take some time to admire the fireworks after sunset tonight.

Happy Fourth of July!
