avanti rx essential exfoliating pads

After finishing off a jar of 50 Essential Exfoliating Pads from Avanti RX, I’m a bona fide convert to regular “acid toning” to keep my acne-prone skin in check.

(Yes, I too, am a Caroline Hirons-lover.)

{Avanti RX sent me samples of its Essential Exfoliating Pads to review. A plastic jar of 50 exfoliating pads costs $23.)

Avanti RX is a physician-developed natural skincare line that marries well-known exfoliants (think glycolic, salicylic, malic, lactic and kojic acids) with botanical-based ingredients such as green tea and bearberry.

The line is designed to nourish and solve skin issues, and has a dedicated acne line that piqued my interest last year. The star of the line is the Essential Exfoliating Pads, which help refine dull, lifeless complexions and unclog pores.

See, this is the magic of acids. They send those dead skin cells and trapped hair follicles on their way, deep-cleaning the epidermis and prepping it for the wonderful serums and moisturizers in your regimen.

Yet, with a simple exfoliating pad, you get this deep-cleaning action in a few simple swipes a few times a week. I like to use my acid toning pads at night after cleansing.

Here’s the full ingredients list:

Purified Water, Glycolic Acid, Salicylic Acid, Lactic Acid, Witch Hazel, Licorice Extract, Kojic Acid, Green Tea, Bearberry Extract, Citric Acid, Malic Acid, Sodium Lactate, Potassium Sorbate, Hexylene Glycol

Here’s a cheat sheet of what all of these wonderful acids do for the skin:

  • Glycolic Acid: Stimulates and resurfaces the skin allowing for better collagen production
  • Salicylic Acid: Gently treats and prevents acne thanks to its ability to unclog pores by liquefying sebum
  • Malic Acid: Boosts collagen products and resurfaces the skin
  • Lactic Acid: Stimulates new skin cell growth from the basal layer; stimulates hyaluronic acid in the lower levels of the epidermis; acts as an accelerator for skin lighteners
  • Kojic Acid: Antibacterial agent and natural skin lightener derived from mushrooms

Typically, I swipe with these acid-packed pads every other night depending on my skin’s condition, but when I’m PMS-ing (read: crazy hormonal skin weeks), I bump it up and skip every third night.

However, the formula in Avanti RX’s Essential Exfoliating Pads is gentle enough to use every night if your skin is very oily like mine and accustomed to acids. The pads themselves are not as soft as others I have tried, though. That’s really my only critique of these pads, as the ingredients list is quite clean and loaded with the best acids available for modern skincare.

While Avanti RX’s Essential Exfoliating Pads can be used both day and night, use caution when using them (or any acids) during the day. Sunscreen is a must post-acid toning because of the nature of acids; they can make skin more sensitive to sun damage.

Also, some skin types may not take well to acids. Very sensitive types can experience irritation or burning. Experimentation is key, and patch-testing is a must.

With all that said, I’ve been absolutely enamored with the results of regular acid toning.

For someone who prefers using witch hazel-based toners to get that deep clean, I’ve found that regular acid toning helps my skin turn over dead cells more quickly and keep everything extremely clean and ready for my supercharged serums.

Though I still break out, I’ve come off of a huge cycle of terrible acne (seriously, three months of not-so-great cysts and red bumps) thanks to acid toning withΒ Avanti RX’s Essential Exfoliating Pads and a bit of stress management.

I’d be quick to repurchase and recommend these pads if the texture of the pads were softer, but they’re still a great buy even if they are not the softest.

I have not yet repurchased them because I wanted to try another popular, clean brand that’s easily available, but Avanti RX’s Essential Exfoliating Pads are definitely on my list to consider repurchasing once my search for a clean acid toner is complete.
