wardrobe essentials | work totes to spice up your office

The last thing you want on a Monday morning is for your tote bag, carrying your laptop, lunch and other stuff you can cram into it, to break due to wear and tear.

Well, luckily, I haven’t experienced that horror, but only because I was able to wise up and quit using my Aldo tote I bought back in March to lug around my everyday work essentials.

It was a cheapie find at $55, but it didn’t last long with my MacBook Pro, wallet, makeup case and notepad shoved into it every day. The straps began to wear, and because I can’t afford to replace an expensive laptop, the cheapie bag had to go!

For now, I’m sporting my complimentary work tote bag (it’s a sturdy Land’s End bag, but isn’t something that easily transitions from office hours to happy hour) until I can decide upon a replacement tote bag.

Here’s a few I’ve rounded up that are nearly identical to my Aldo bag. What do you think? Any other suggestions?

Aldo “Nickoley”: This was my beloved tote that lasted all of a couple months before it began to show signs of extreme wear. If you like this bag, I’d suggest using it only as an oversize tote — no laptops allowed!

Brahmin “Libby” Color Block Tote: This tote is very similar to the Aldo one, but with a touch of leather and some great, glossy croc-embossed leather at the bottom. I probably wouldn’t have any trouble with wear and tear on the handles since they attach to the body via a shiny gold ring.

Urban Outfitters “Deena & Ozzy” Chain Tote: From gold chains to high-contrast buckles, this tote has a lot going on — and I kinda like it. I’m wary of buying another cheap bag, though, because I do demand a lot out of it for day-to-day use. Has anyone had any experience with this trendy tote?

Kate Spade New York “Grove Court Abela” Shoulder Bag: The most-expensive of my lineup, I’m drawn to this bag’s simplicity and peekaboo-polka dot interior lining. It’s made of genuine leather, so it’s definitely making those nearly $400 work for you, but I’m wondering again if those thin-ish straps can keep up with my daily bag lady needs.

Neiman Marcus Last Call Colorblock North-South Tote: This inexpensive tote is a step up from the Aldo and Urban bags in price, but I’m not sure if the quality competes. The bag looks nice and simple, but seems to lack the exterior zippered storage space that the other two boast.

wardrobe essentials | bags to spice up your closet

Because I’m a bit more utilitarian when it comes to bags (I use a gigantic tote for my laptop and everyday essentials, and then try to switch it up at night), I’m slow to adopt trends and smaller bags because of pure functionality.

However, that’s changing this season, as I’m getting a bit more keen on accessorizing right down to the purse on my shoulder or clutch in my hands. Here’s a few fun, on-trend bags I’m considering adding to my spring/summer 2012 wardrobe. Bonus: All of these bags are less than $100!

Highlighter Yellow

I’ve managed to add some neon into my spring wardrobe, but the highlighter yellow skirt I bought isn’t something I’ll be wearing every week.

To integrate a flash of bright into my everyday look, this Marc by Marc Jacobs Neoprene Wristlet Case is a low-commitment piece that can live in your purse. It’s designed to hold a point-and-shoot camera, but it can also be used for breakable toiletries, like nail polish, because it has a fleece-lined interior.

Coppertone Clutch

I’ve been eyeing these envelope-style clutches for a while, but have yet to add one to my evening bag collection. This BCBG Matte Sequins Envelope Clutch caught my eye because of its sleek lines, understated sequins and easy-to-transition-from-season-to-season color.

While this is definitely not the most practical clutch style (I tend to choose clutches that have a wristlet-style to them), the aesthetic of these envelope clutches is just so classy that I can’t resist.

Coming Up Roses

I haven’t had a babydoll backpack since sixth grade (I remember them being all the rage back then!), but it seems like the mini-me style is making a comeback.

I like the floral print and contrasting colors in this Kimchi Blue backpack from Urban Outfitters. It would be the perfect addition to a weekend camping trip (um, if I camped…) or to wear during a summer concert (a little more my style).

wardrobe essentials | shoes to anchor your closet

“I’m Kim Wallace, of course I bought you shoes.”

This sentence came out of my mouth after my friend Caro was pleasantly surprised that I got her a pair of ballet flats for her birthday graduation.

You see, in addition to being obsessed with all things beauty and anything with sugar in it, I’m a bit of a shoe freak.

Shoes, like accessories, are easy pieces to update your wardrobe with without breaking the bank (though if you choose the red-soled beauties, you can quite easily break the bank!).

And with cropped pants and skirts in full swing this spring, you can wear even the most-basic black skirt to work, but with stunning shoes, you’ll rack up the style points and compliments from your coworkers. Not to mention — shoes always fit. There are no off-days when it comes to footwear (unless, I guess, you break your foot).

These styles of shoes anchor my closet and are my typical go-to’s during the work week. And yes, animal print is a neutral!

1. Stuart Weitzman Madison in Adobe Aniline Patent | $298

Every lady needs a pair of flesh-colored, patent leather pumps. Worn with a shorter dress, these babies will make your stems appear miles long, and the sleek patent shine, combined with well-moisturized legs, will turn a few heads.

2. type Z Lolla in Black | $69

Mary Janes will never go out of style. The trick to finding the best MJ’s is to look for a pair that has a strap that hits just right — not too high up so that it hacks off your leg, which makes you appear shorter.

3. Lauren by Ralph Lauren Amelie in Polo Tan | $98

A great pair of basic brown (or any color) heels with an embossed animal print, such as crocodile, adds a bit of visual interest to an otherwise everyday shoe.

Bottom row, from left to right

1. Sam Edelman Portney in Leopard Brahma | $115

Find leopard prints that are the perfect, medium size, with a nice balance of black, tan and brown. Wear them with anything — you’ve got black, brown and tan in the palette, so you really have any style choice you want! This is why leopard is a neutral.

2. Anne Klein Serafina in Red Patent | $99

Because I live in Kansas, the law requires every female to own red shoes, so this is my pick. A bright, candy-colored heel can perk up even the gloomiest day (insert tornado/Oz joke here). In all seriousness (because shoes are very serious around here!), a great pair of bright shoes will liven up a basic outfit by adding an unexpected pop of color.

3. Steve Madden Pammyy in Grey Fabric | $100

I love wedges. They’re way more comfortable than heels, but offer the same lengthening effect on your legs without looking too clunky. Just be sure to choose wedges that are all one color; if you opt for heels that are different than the main body of the shoe, you risk getting the hoof effect on your tootsies.

wardrobe essentials | accessories to spice up your closet

When it comes to transitioning my wardrobe from season to season, I rely on accessories to stay fresh and within my budget. The right accessories can instantly change the mood of an outfit and create a look that feels new — even when your clothes aren’t.

Though I frequent fast fashion stops such as Charming Charlie’s and Forever 21 for inexpensive, trendy accessories, I also take time to research and consider great investment items that can sustain season after season. I’ve had my eye on these four pieces for a while and am ready to splurge on one of them for spring 2012.

accessories

1. Bolbach Silver Python Cuff with Logo Cufflink | $125

2. 1928 Jewelry Brown Flower Bib Necklace | $41.25 (a *bit* expensive for costume jewelry, but not outrageous)

3. Marc by Marc Jacobs ‘Blade’ Crystal Index Watch in Rose Gold | $275

4. Prada Retro Sunglasses in Opal Pink/Brown Gradient | $245

Do you have a favorite from these four items? Tell me which ones you’re drawn to — and get ready for another “Free Stuff Friday” tomorrow with a chance to WIN one of these spring accessory picks.

Any guesses? (Several hints on my Twitter and Instagram feeds!)
