trend report | boho chic makeup and accessories

If you know me well, you know that I adore accessories almost as much as I obsess over clean, green beauty products.

My dresser proudly displays my jewelry while my closet stores bags and clutches in little cubes on the top shelf.

(Remember seeing everything in this feature?)

Though it seems I’m overflowing with bright bags and blingy jewels, I can’t help but ooh and ahh over earthy accessories that bring me back to nature and put the spotlight on beautiful raw stones, warm wood and delicious metals that complement my fair-with-olive-undertones complexion.

I’ve found that Lovely Hunt, a new online shop that specializes in handmade jewelry, bags and home decor inspired by nature, satisfies my craving for meaningful accessories that don’t look like what every other blogger or girl on the street is wearing.

Here’s four of my favorite accessories from Lovely Hunt and how to draw inspiration from them for two different boho chic makeup looks that feel playful and warm.

Earrings + Makeup Look 1 | Bejeweled

lovely hunt dimensions crystal earrings

Lovely Hunt’s beautiful Dimensions Crystal Earrings, handmade with raw quartz and brass, inspired me to keep my eye makeup light and my lips a medium-strong jewel tone to keep the attention on these stunning little works of art.

To complement the brass, I went with Ecco Bella’s “Merlot” lipstick with a light layer of BareMinerals’ Marvelous Moxie Gloss in “Stunner” on top.

On my lashes and lids are Studio 78’s natural mascara (review to come!) and Sunday Riley’s “Fool’s Gold” eye shadow blended with Alima Pure’s “Venus” eye shadow.

For a soft kiss on the cheeks, I used Tarte’s “Fearless” Cheek Stain.

With such eye-catching earrings as these, you really have to keep your makeup subtle, yet still highlight a main feature with a strong-ish color. I could also see myself doing a light-smoky eye with these and just pale pink lips.

Earrings + Makeup Look 2 | Garden Goddess

Never would I have imagined using the words “sequins” and “earthy” in the same sentence, but Lovely Hunt’s Vintage Sequins Earrings strike the perfect balance between earthy and glam by taking advantage of muted tones and low shine.

Matte black vintage sequins anchor a half-circle of hammered and recycled brass while a vintage brass chain adds movement and a little additional texture.

The mix of black, brass and pewter tones had me reaching for my olive green eyeliner and eye shadows to stay within the color family without being matchy-matchy.

My staple cat eye came back for this “Garden Goddess” look thanks to Eyeko London’s Skinny Liquid Eyeliner and a mixture of a couple of discontinued eye shadow colors from Urban Decay (not clean, I know — sorry) — a bright green that I toned down with a coppery shade.

To keep the neutral color palette at play, I chose Ilia Beauty’s “Nobody’s Baby” for my lips and Kjaer Weis’ “Sun Touched” for my cheeks.

I think these earrings could also be taken a whole different direction with sexy, vivid makeup, like a bold red lip and kohl-lined eyes. That’s the beauty of a neutral, vintage pair of earrings with subtle glam (thanks, sequins!).

Lovely Hunt Accessories Picks

lovely hunt palomino bag and dipped wood necklace

While Lovely Hunt’s Handmade Wild Palomino Bag and Grove Wood and Brass Necklace don’t have accompanying makeup looks, I was drawn to these two pieces for several reasons.

First, the Handmade Wild Palomino Bag has such interesting textures — genuine leather with an embossed design plus tan and white cowhide — and is the perfect crossbody bag for all those summer music festivals on deck.

I think it would look perfect with the right pair of worn-in cutoffs, some tough, light-colored booties and a flowy crop top.

And with the right flowy crop top (one without any embellishments in the front), you could easily wear Lovely Hunt’s Grove Wood and Brass Necklace with your festival ensemble.

Handmade from three layers of wood, the Grove Wood and Brass Necklace got my attention with its strong triangular shape, and the triangle-within-triangle look adds some dimension.

valentine’s day gift guide 2014

Whether you’re single, taken or cynical about it all, Valentine’s Day is a reminder to embrace love in all areas of your life.

I’ve had my share of both single and attached Valentine’s Days, and I love the ritual of love letter-writing, gift-showering and general loving-on-people that comes with the holiday regardless of your Facebook relationship status.

Sure, we should do this year-round, but I do enjoy sending treats in the mail to friends near and far, and it’s important to also remember to treat yourself.

Here’s my list of eight items, from low-budget to high-end, that I think would make perfect presents for you or some lucky lady you love.

kimberlyloc valentines day gift guide 2014

1. Plum Pretty Sugar Eye Masks

Beauties, we all need our rest. How glam are these eye masks from Plum Pretty Sugar? Taking cat naps throughout the week in prep for Valentine’s weekend is easy with these pretty little things.

2. Mulberry Effie Tote in Bright Red Spongy Pebbled

I’m lusting over Mulberry bags right now. This bright red Effie commands attention while staying sophisticated in a classic form. Definitely the ultimate last-forever Valentine’s Day treat.

3. Lurk RSW005 Perfume Oil

Warm sandalwood and rose invite your special someone a little closer. The scent lingers and makes you feel flirty and beautiful. A personal favorite of mine.

4. Acure Organics Lip Balm Dark Chocolate + Mint

Sweeten up your kisser with this delectable blend of dark chocolate and mint. You’ll have to be mindful of how often you find yourself reapplying this yummy USDA organic lip balm. It’s that good!

5. May Lindstrom Skin I Am Love Limited Edition Collection

Skin chef May Lindstrom released her limited edition (she only produced 35 and they are selling FAST!) “I Am Love” collection yesterday. I already ordered mine! I can speak to the beauty of “The Jasmine Garden,” face mist and am thrilled to try her new face oil. I’m also looking forward to sipping tea from a handcrafted mug made by the same artisan who created the lovely clay bowl May offers for blending “The Problem Solver.”

6. Stackable Rings via Zady

These stackable rings were designed in Chicago and made in Mexico by women who are learning the jewelry business. I love the design of these rings; it reminds me of a budding family and would be perfect for a new or expecting mama.

7. Illume Star Jasmine Essential Boxed Candle

Illume candles have a special place in my heart. They’re always well-designed and smell oh-so-good. Jasmine is a constant addiction, of course, and the chic gold and white packaging has luxe written all over it.

8. Honeydew Intimates Valentine’s Day Sweetheart Rayon and Lace Chemise

I’m all about understated sexy when it comes to nighties. Honeydew Intimates delivers in that arena, and I love the mix of soft gray and baby pink in this particular chemise.

holiday gift guide 2013

We have just a little more than a week left before Christmas — are you anywhere near finished with your shopping?

Just in case you aren’t, I’ve rounded up my top style and beauty picks for the holidays and beyond.

Some of these items are on my actual wish list this year, while others are tried-and-true favorites that I think your loved ones will love, too.

Happy last-minute shopping!

kimberlyloc holiday gift guide 2013

From top row to bottom row, left to right:

1. Jane Iredale Glamour Eye & Lip Palette, $75

I’ve been playing with this palette for a few weeks now. It’s got such a great little sampling of perky eye and lip colors that make me excited to paint my face in the mornings.

While the color pots are small, you get a great range of colors — 15 eye shadows and 15 lippies! — to experiment with. I’m sure you can nail the perfect holiday looks with this pretty palette. (Also available at Nordstrom!)

2. Roots Rose Radish Jasmine & Clary Sage Perfume, $50

Roots Rose Radish’s packages its solid perfumes in cowrie shells and houses its various fragrance oils in cold-pressed, unrefined jojoba oil for a slow release of scent.

While it’s no secret that I covet the Jasmine & Clary Sage scent, Roots Rose Radish also offers gorgeous perfumes in Ylang Ylang & Grapefruit and Rose Frankincense & Patchouli.

3. H. Gillerman Organics Remedy Pack, $160

Introduce a loved one to the power of aromatherapy with H. Gillerman Organics’ Remedy Pack, which features full size essential oil remedies — Sleep Remedy, Tension Remedy, Stress Remedy and Sinus Remedy — in a cute little Brooklyn-made pouch.

I swear by Hope Gillerman’s aromatherapy treasures; she keeps me pepped up with peppermint at work (Tension Remedy) and soothes me to bed at night (Sleep Remedy). Sinus Remedy and Stress Remedy must be equally amazing.

4. Prada Sunglasses, $290

I would feel transported to a magical land every time I slipped on these Prada shades.

With its whimsical side designs and square lenses, these sunglasses draw a little more attention to your well-hidden eyes and shield you glamorously from the sun’s rays.

Gift these to someone who isn’t notorious for breaking or losing her sunglasses …

5. Osmia Organics Greenest and Cleanest Soap Set, $130

My favorite bar soaps, hands down, are made by the hands of Sarah Villafranco, founder of Colorado-based Osmia Organics.

These soaps are special; the curves on the top of the soap showcase Sarah’s artistry and care. Each scent triggers different memories and feelings while cleansing your body with saponified oils and butters blended with various clays and essential oils to nourish your skin.

6. Hobo “Farrah” Bag, $248

Also available in Caramel, Stone, Black and Peacock, the Hobo “Farrah” is big enough to use as an everyday bag yet sleek and compact enough to use as an evening clutch — just remove the strap!

I’ve had my eye on this bag for a few months now. The striking violet color spoke to me in so many ways — namely “take me home!”

7. May Lindstrom Skin “The Good Stuff” Radiance Oil, $110

What better time than the holidays to splurge on a sexy, scrumptious body oil from May Lindstrom Skin?

I’m a huge fan of this sweet body oil, reserving it for special nights when I want to amp up the flirtation and see my skin glisten and glow. “The Good Stuff” gives you that feeling of power and beauty typically found in sexy perfumes or lingerie; May calls this her “fabric-free lingerie” and could not be more on-target with that description!

You can also count on May to deliver this cocoa-scented body oil to you wrapped in gorgeous black and gold and with a handwritten note; who knows, if you ask, she may even address the note to the lucky gift recipient.

8. Red Dirt Shop “The Escapist by Jenn Porreca” iPhone 5/5s Case, $37

Kansas City-based Red Dirt Shop partners with local artists to create stunning cell phone cases that are sure to spark conversations.

Beyond talking about the beauty of your new cell phone case, you can talk about how a portion of the sale of your case went to helping Water.org build wells in countries like Ethiopia, India, Haiti and Uganda so that families there could have access to clean water.

Every five cases sold gives one person clean water for life and exposes individual artists to more people who may adore their work.

9. Shinola “Runwell 28mm” Watch, $600

Made in Detroit and now available in Kansas City, Shinola offers timeless timepieces for men and women that command attention.

With their sleek lines, bold faces and supple leather, Shinola watches are bringing back a bit of American pride to high-quality watchmaking and are sure to catch attention.

10. Cashmere-lined Leather Gloves, $54

You can never go wrong gifting gloves (as long as you know the right size!), but a pair of cashmere-lined leather gloves steps it up a notch.

In a classic or bright color, leather gloves show off style and sophistication that comes with age — and the right pair of leather gloves will get better as the years go by.

11. Clare Vivier Simple Tote, $368

Made in Los Angeles, this suede and leather Clare Vivier tote is effortlessly chic, with rich colors from eco-friendly dyes.

The Simple Tote can works for everyday laptop-schlepping to and from work as well as for those long errand-running days when you just need a roomy, yet stylish, bag to run around town.

outfit post | understated beauty

This is my attempt at wearing more color.

kimberlyloc outfit post understated beauty

My closet is heavily anchored with blacks, whites, grays and beiges, but every now and then, I make myself buy (and wear!) pretty fall colors such as burnt orange and deep teal.

Burnt orange is a new one for me.

My orange section is about three-pieces deep, but this color works so well with my hair, skin and eyes that I may reconsider the magic of orange — especially because it works so well with the pretty rose gold jewelry I’ve been collecting lately.

I’m not usually one for dainty jewelry (the chunkier, the better!), but this sweet rose gold and sterling silver arrow necklace from my friends at Blue Nile feels so pretty with the soft opening on this top.

You can’t help but look at it, as it picks up the coloring in the burnt orange and reflects the light beautifully.

So, in case you were wondering where the “Understated Beauty” title of this post came from, it all stemmed from a cute little quiz I took on Blue Nile’s website to uncover my personality and style.

I think they hit the nail on the head with my style type!

When I was finished with the quiz, I got this fun infographic (based on my answers and a little bit of Facebook info) and jewelry recommendations (news flash: I like jewelry!) to “leave nothing to chance” this holiday season (teacher man, are you reading?).

If you want to create your own infographic (c’mon, you know you want to know if you’re a “Jet Setter” or a “Queen Bee”), you’ll be entered to win a three-carat diamond tennis bracelet ($4,500 value).

(The winner will be announced on December 30!)

Keep an eye on the blog this Friday, as there may be a little surprise for you then, too.
