favorite styles from the red carpet runway showcase benefitting wayside waifs | kansas city fashion week fall 2012 | kansas city, missouri

Everything during Kansas City Fashion Week built up to this night: Night One, the Red Carpet Runway Showcase Benefitting Wayside Waifs.

We got a taste of what was to come during this year’s shows during the Boutique Sponsor Showcase, Fashion’s Night Out and the pre-show party.

But this. This is what Kansas City Fashion Week is all about. Local, regional and national designs coming together to showcase their talents, their vision and their unique point of view and empower us to express ourselves — our creativity — through what we choose to put on our backs.

Enjoy.

lenzanita couture kansas city fashion week

I would wear this look from Lenzanita Couture (which hails from South Dakota) to work. It’s feminine, sophisticated and well-tailored. I love the lightweight, sheer top in a sweet floral print that could go from summer to fall and back to spring.

I think I embarrassed Jess with my loud “Rock Chalk Jayhawk!” cheer once Margiehogue for Awava‘s designs came down the catwalk.

Margie Hogue is an emerging designer who hails from my alma mater, the University of Kansas, and creates fair-trade fashions inspired by Ugandan social enterprise, Awava.

Her tribal looks got me thinking about how I could go bolder in my wardrobe and be a little bit more daring in my pattern mixing.

I obsess over American Trash. This year’s looks, created by designer Karma Jade, brought to life her vision for an edgy, rocker chic line that was both playful and detailed (look at that fun back!).

This year’s styles look more polished and feminine compared to last year’s looks — I loved the dresses and prints Karma sent down the catwalk. The way they flowed was just stunning.

As a green girl who loves the idea of using recycled, sustainable materials in all facets of life, I applaud American Trash’s creations. Karma Jade is helping redefine “eco-couture” by removing the “crunchy” connotations and replacing them with “edgy and chic.”

sushe by j tracey kansas city fashion week

SuShe by J. Tracey made me gasp. When that yellow number went down the runway, I wanted to cry. She hit it on the head with the fit, the color, the fabric and the faint amount of sexy in that deep V.

As for the look on the left: This inspires me to have fun and be playful with my body. I recently got a front-cutout dress that is tasteful yet playful, and while some people raised their brows at me wanting to wear it out and about, this SuShe’s look reaffirmed my belief in wearing what you want.

(I feel the need to insert a “YOLO” here. So there it is.)

donna faye kansas city fashion week

Oh Reighann. This model has such sass, yet is so damn sweet.

I loved seeing her strut this Donna Faye look down the runway. The attitude and bounce in the dress reminded me of Betsey Johnson shows and designs, and the style is so eclectic and over-the-top — in a good way! Bravo! We need more of this in KC.

cheryl eve acosta with chelsea riane designs kansas city fashion week

Aww, the accessories. I have never seen such gorgeous, statement pieces. Cheryl Eve Acosta with Chelsea Riane Designs showed bold, distinctive jewelry — such as this scarf-like, wraparound necklace — that is glamorous, artsy and alive. I wanted every piece that she showed.

hilary brown kansas city fashion week

Even though we’re coming off of summer, Hilary Brown reminded us that hey, we live in KC — it’s hot in here until October!

Her sexy swimwear, modeled by my girl April, was Bond girl-esque yet sophisticated. I think I need this suit for the hot tub days that await me this fall.

lisu vega kansas city fashion week

Words cannot describe the awe I was in as Lisu Vega of Miami sent her models out.

The impeccable tailoring, detailing and accessorizing kept my eyes glued to the runway. I almost didn’t get these shots! This is a collection that requires further gazing at. The colors, the layers, the details. Probably my favorite collection of the evening.

You can find more pics on my Facebook page (and a few videos from a couple show on my YouTube page)— which ones are your favorites?
