kate spade & lucky fashion show hosted by tim gunn | kansas city, missouri

It’s been a fashion-filled weekend.

Despite battling a vicious bug since Friday, my friend Laura and I made it out to the Country Club Plaza on Saturday to see Tim Gunn host the Kate Spade New York and Lucky Brand Jeans fashion show.

I almost skipped out on this show in favor of sleeping off my sickness in bed, but managed to muster up enough energy (with the promise of eating magically curing pho at Vietnam Cafe after the show) to hang out for about an hour while Tim Gunn talked size, fit and proportion of clothes for all body types.

While most people recognize Tim Gunn from Project Runway, few may realize that this respected fashion critic is the chief creative officers of Fifth and Pacific Companies (formerly Liz Claiborne), the company that owns Kate Spade New York, Lucky Brand Jeans (ahh, get it now?) and Juicy Couture.

Tim offered some great tips during the show, and even a great little piece of trivia:

Tim Gunn’s Fashion Tips

1. Hold clothing up to your chin. If the color makes your skin glow, go for it! If it makes it look sallow and washed out, refrain.

2. Think of your body in thirds. Don’t cut it in half with harsh belts or lines. Instead, draw natural separations that work with the shape of your body instead of against it.

3. Guys: If you’re going to wear an opened-up button-down top, be sure to tuck in your undershirt and wear a belt. This keeps your look polished yet casual.

A Great Piece of Trivia c/o Tim Gunn

Quit calling sleeveless undershirts “wifebeaters!” They’re called “tank tops,” and for good reason.

“This is a very esteemed piece of clothing,” Gunn says. He notes that the tank top dates back to early France, where the French called a swimming pool a “tank.” (makes sense now, eh?)

All of these tips and tidbits were a nice foray into Gunn mentioning his forthcoming fashion book, “Tim Gunn’s Fashion Bible: The Fascinating History of Everything in Your Closet.” I’ll be adding that to my Pinterest wish list soon!

And now, more fashion show pictures!

I’m loving all the fun color and flattering shapes Kate Spade has to offer.

Such an easy, office-friendly look. I was mostly staring at this model’s hair…gorgeous!

Little Miss Laura has been swooning over this beautiful trench coat for months. It’s currently 40% off at Kate Spade and calling her name.

Tim Gunn definitely noted that these Kate Spade swimsuits had a very specific cut for a very specific body type. In other words (his words!) “skimpy.” “Try it on” he reminded the audience!

I’d wear the top of this bathing suit with a more-forgiving, all-black bottom.

Has Tim Gunn come to your town? What do you think of this fashion guru? Tell me your opinion of the very-opinionated Mr. Gunn in the comments section!
