home decor: obsessed with owls

I’m not sure when this mini-obsession began (no, I wasn’t a Chi Omega in college), but I’ve become very drawn to anything with owls — jewelry, clothing and most recently, home decor. Perhaps it’s the mysterious nature of owls or their association with bravery and wisdom that lures me to them. Whatever it is, I like it and want that feeling to flock to my home.

Now that I have beautiful living room furniture en route to my new apartment, I’ve seriously begun thinking about how I can add warmth and personality to my new nest. Owl accents just might be the answer. Bold, masculine owls coupled with soft orange flowers, an ocean-like wall and chubby throw blankets create a beautifully balanced ecosystem of colors, textures and ambiance.

Take a look at a few of the owl home decor items I’ve been preying on for a while. What do you think of them?

owl lamp from target

{This stately owl lamp from Target ($40) would work well on an end table. My first alteration to it, though, would be to spray paint the lampshade a nice accent color — perhaps gold? Photo Courtesy Target}

wooly night owl from vivaterra

{VivaTerra's Wooly Night Owl ($79) shows the softer side of this nocturnal creature. I like the texture and the back-story behind this wooly owl: it's hand-knitted by women in Kenya and dyed with plants the women grow in the their gardens. Photo Courtesy VivaTerra}

owl bookends

{These striking owl bookends are carved out of palewa, an Indian soapstone. I like the soft curves and light texture of these handmade owl bookends ($38) from Ten Thousand Villages. Photo Courtesy Ten Thousand Villages}

tiny turquoise owl magnets

{Tons of magnets adorn the side of my fridge. I'd let these tiny turquoise owl magnets rest on the front because they'd make me happy every morning when I catch a glimpse of them as I'm rushing around my apartment. They're a total steal ($4.75) on Etsy. Photo By cynicalredhead/Courtesy Etsy}

leo the owl bank from urban outfitters

{OK, so I already own a plastic piggy bank (which sadly only has pennies and maybe a few quarters and dimes that the teacher man has dropped in for me), but this vibrant turquoise owl bank from Urban Outfitters caught my eye. Leo the Owl Bank ($12) has a cute, mischievious face and a nice oversized head (to fill with quarters!). If this isn't a playful personality piece, then I don't know what is. I think you’ve missed your calling as a home decorator, Kim! This idea is so awesome, and I love how you’ve shown here that owls can be stately and playful. The VivaTerra owl is my favorite. I love imagining him nestled in some comfy throw pillows. Cannot wait to visit!

      :) Thanks Megan! The best thing about moving (and getting rid of all your furniture, etc.) is being able to let your imagination run wild and start over! Hoot hoot :)

    Nice hooters.
